MATTHEW KELSO

ON THE RECORD

MATTHEW KELSO is a Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist, DJ, producer, and founder of Mt. Zephyr Records, known for his deep basslines, cosmic synthscapes, and free jazz improvisation. His fifth album, Too Busy Gettin’ Busy, was recorded in a single day at Brunjo, featuring six tracks written and tracked on the spot. “Less room for thought, more room for magic,” he says. Kelso describes his evolving sound as: “My catalog starts in the basement and digs a hole to the ocean.”

ARTIST ECHOES

“My first time recording at Brunjo will definitely be the first of many. Amelia, Jordan, and Tanir were the perfect crew to accommodate my way of working, which in this case was 100% improvised. Five musicians created six brand new songs in one day at Brunjo. These were collaboratively written on the spot in the studio. I knew that it would take a unique group to accommodate my approach as it is very much outside of the way Nashville typically records. To accomplish something like this requires an ultimately comfortable and stress-free atmosphere. You couldn’t ask for a better atmosphere than this gem out in the woods in Kingston Springs. Not only was the tracking process fun and productive, they were also able to master it in a separate session and get everything together quickly. I can’t wait to get back into Brunjo for my next batch of weird, funky, and loud songs. It quickly became a second home and I feel lucky to have found this studio, and the folks who run it.”
